Making Mala feel mischievous
A cat that is merely cute is furniture. A cat that is mischievous is a protagonist. The difference turned out to be about six frames.
Mala's run cycle went through four full rebuilds. The version we shipped into the prototype holds her anticipation pose two frames longer than animation orthodoxy suggests, and drops a frame out of the recovery. The result reads as deciding rather than reacting — she looks like she has a plan, and the plan is bad.
THE GUILTY PAUSE
The single most valuable animation in the game is one nobody asked for: a half-second idle where Mala looks directly at whatever she just knocked over.
Playtesters who never once laughed at the physics laughed at the pause. It costs nothing, it interrupts no input, and it converted the character from avatar to someone.
Cute is what the character looks like. Mischievous is what the character looks like it is about to do.
KEEPING IT READABLE
Everything above still has to survive being three centimetres tall on a phone. Silhouette first, colour second, detail never — Mala is legible as a shape at any size, and every expressive frame is a change to that shape rather than a change to her face.
